Citrix Presentation Server™

The best way to centrally deploy applications and provide on-demand access

For application virtualization, CPS is the industry standard, utilizing centralization and secure architecture, CPS enables you to carry out IT operations regardless of connection type, device used, or location.  All computer applications are stored on a server that that can be accessed securely by simplified laptops, desktops, kiosks, even PDA’s across the organization and from remote locations.  Regardless to whether r unning on Microsoft® Windows Server™ or UNIX® operating systems, Presentation Server supports virtually any custom or commercially packaged Windows®, UNIX, Java, and Web application, no matter the infrastructure diversity.

Key Features of Presentation Server 4.0

In addition to supporting 25% more users per server with Win32, and more than 33% with x64, Presentation Server 4 also provides 4X faster printing and more compatibility with applications.

  • CPU Utilization Management
    • Fair Share algorithm – allocates CPU equally limiting users to a fair share of the processing power, however if there is more CPU power available then the users are allocated more CPU power. This creates a more consistent performance and higher user density per server.
  • Virtual Memory Optimization
    • By rebasing DLL’s during off-peak hours, and ensuring that only one instance of a DLL is loaded on a server, CPS 4.0 avoids memory conflicts, reduces page swapping and memory usage. Again, higher user density us achieved from better CPU and memory use.
  • Application Isolation

Challenge

  • Apps not designed for multi-user environments
  • App versions or DLL’s conflict on same server
  • Apps assume unique IP per instance, often to enforce licenses.

Solution

  • Applications get isolation environments
  • Redirect access to files and registry
  • Redirect named objects to user-specific locations

Benefits

  • Server consolidation - Host multiple versions and apps on the same server
  • Extend benefits of Presentation Server to more applications.
  • New Universal Print Driver & Extended Print functionality
  • The new Universal print driver has been re-written from a PCL driver to an Enhanced MetaFile format (EMF) providing as much as 4x faster printing, and enables faster printing from locations with less bandwidth. The new driver provides extended capabilites back to the printer, like tray selection, stapling, etc.
  • Proximity Printing
    • As the office grows, users spread, and mobility increases, one of the problems that users face is the ability to print to their default or “normal” printer. As well, administrators want to control the availability of the printers and capabilities for different users and devices. With CPS 4.0, printing policies are added to existing connection policies, and default printers and settings are set as a default and are configurable to users, IP addresses, servers, and clients. So administrators have more control over printing, as well as the ability for users to print to the nearest printer as they move or change locations.

  • Smooth Roaming*
    • Improved user productivity and satisfaction — workers benefit from a consistent computing experience, uninterrupted access and the flexibility to use whatever device they prefer. Applications and work sessions are maintained as they roam from device to device.
