Freecom releases RFID-protected External Hard Drive

Remembering passwords and pincodes are becoming a thing of the past as security technologies continue to evolve. Freecom has now released a radio frequency identification (RFID) protected external USB hard drive.

A simple RFID "card token" locks and unlocks the device when placed against the drive itself, transferring a 128-bit AES encrypted security code. This device does not require that the protected data itself be encrypted, and is more about convenience than high-level security.

An article posted today on PCWorld explains that "the design doesn't necessarily offer any more underlying security than simply using 128-bit AES encryption with a standard password."

The 500 GB - 2 TB capacity drives are not yet priced for the US, but range from $119 - $289 euros according to the PCWorld article. (349 according to Freecom's site as of today. The 2 TB model is also sold out as of right now.)
