Dynamic Computer, Stratum Global partner with regional colleges to help train RFID workforce

Farmington Hills, Mich. July 21, 2009 -- St. Clair County Community College and Mott Community College today announced that they have developed Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology labs and curriculum with Dynamic Computer Corporation and Stratum Global. The RFID certificate program was created as a part of a three-year, $2 million Community-Based Job Training Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. The RFID program will be offered starting fall 2009 at St. Clair County Community College and during winter 2010 at Mott Community College.

"Both labs and curricula will have significant impact within the colleges, the community and the business world," said Stratum Global COO Bill Hood. "Graduates can pursue RFID as a career, and those returning for continuing education will increase their marketability. Corporate training will ultimately provide RFID certification for existing technology professionals as well."

Chicago-based Stratum Global and Farmington Hills, Mich.-based Dynamic Computer Corporation partnered with SC4's Workforce Training Institute and Project Manager Dennis Valade to develop the 30-credit-hour program to teach RFID from the basics to full-scale project implementation. The course will prepare students to sit for the CompTIA RFID+ Certification test.

"Stratum Global was the most-qualified and best-prepared vendor to respond to SC4's request for proposal, which was released in late February 2009," Valade said. "Stratum Global has excellent experience in configuring and supplying RFID equipment at other community colleges throughout the country. Their expertise and attention to details has enabled our two colleges to present curricula content that will enhance our student's occupational skills for this emerging technology. Registration now is open for these classes."

Farida Ali, Dynamic's President & CEO, said that this exemplifies a larger trend in high-tech training at local colleges.

"The workforce needs to be prepared to meet the growing demand for qualified technology professionals in emerging Michigan industries. Continuing to depend solely on 4-year universities and their engineering schools for RFID professionals is simply not realistic in today's market," said Ali.

Dynamic provides RFID-integrated solutions in many industries, specializing in health care, education, defense and manufacturing. The 30-year-old IT procurement company saw a need for RFID technology to serve its core customer base, and has since filled an industry niche as a vendor-neutral RFID systems integrator.

Stratum Global has been providing RFID software to meet the needs of industry verticals since 2003.

"Our customers use RFID to solve business problems across all verticals. The one consistent strategy is planning and research. St. Clair students will acquire the skill set to plan, research and implement RFID," said Hood.

Freecom releases RFID-protected External Hard Drive

Remembering passwords and pincodes are becoming a thing of the past as security technologies continue to evolve. Freecom has now released a radio frequency identification (RFID) protected external USB hard drive.

A simple RFID "card token" locks and unlocks the device when placed against the drive itself, transferring a 128-bit AES encrypted security code. This device does not require that the protected data itself be encrypted, and is more about convenience than high-level security.

An article posted today on PCWorld explains that "the design doesn't necessarily offer any more underlying security than simply using 128-bit AES encryption with a standard password."

The 500 GB - 2 TB capacity drives are not yet priced for the US, but range from $119 - $289 euros according to the PCWorld article. (349 according to Freecom's site as of today. The 2 TB model is also sold out as of right now.)

Healthcare IT News: Hospitals leaning to IT for Infection Control

Hospitals Leaning to IT for Infection Control Healthcare IT News

Health Care IT news recently published and article on the increasing use of IT to prevent infection in hospitals. The results came from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC)
2009 APIC Economic Survey.

The study reports that budgets are being slashed for infection prevention due to the economic downturn, despite the increase in healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) in recent years. This also comes at a time when federal guidelines and reduction targets are growing and payer guidelines for reimbursement are refusing payment for many preventable conditions.

There is hope on the horizon though, as the article states that hospitals who have adopted automated systems to enhance infection control are reporting "significantly increased staff efficiency, better patient outcomes and improved financial reimburesement -- and that they would never return to previous manual workflows."

APIC CEO Kathy L. Warye is quoted in the Healthcare IT News article, saying:

"Without enought trained professionals, funding and high-tech solutions that speed access to infection-related data, we are not going to continue to make progress in eliminating preventable infections."

Contact Dynamic for more information on the use of proven technology solutions to prevent HAIs, or visit our Health Care RFID site to view a brief Flash demo (less than 30 sec.) on preventing HAIs with RFID, at http://www.dynamicrfidsolutions.com/solutions/preventing_HAIs.php.
