IT Procurement, efficiency and surviving a recession

Companies are scrambling to stay profitable in today’s uncertain economic climate. Business as we know it is changing due to rising costs, lack of money flowing through the credit system, and the domino-like fall of several corporate and financial giants. Keeping business afloat in an economic storm requires utilizing your resources effectively, maximizing employee productivity and eliminating financial waste.

Information technology can help to support and facilitate this process, but it must be utilized as a means to achieve the solution. Technology is not in itself the solution to any business problem.

It may not immediately seem to matter where you buy your IT hardware and software, but in fact this can be a key place to eliminate waste and inefficiency from your company’s operations. Consider the following contributing factors to the cost of your IT procurement.

Time employees spend:

Submitting RFQs, waiting for quotes and shuffling through vendors’ information.
Registering, managing and requesting warranty information
Haggling with manufacturers for only a slight discount if anything at all
Researching specific types of IT for compatibility
On hold for ordering and customer service
Navigating automated phone systems and Web services
Managing Software Subscriptions
Managing Award Programs that they qualify for (example-HP Purchase Edge)
Researching replacements for discontinued items
Long and involved hold times for servicing systems

Money spent:

Shipping from various vendors
Paying manufacturer direct prices
Negotiating Discount pricing
